Aim: This assignment focuses on applying your understanding of pathophysiology in neonatal
conditions through a case study. It involves:
- Identifying risk factors,
- Discussing nursing/midwifery management,
- Interpreting assessment data in relation to pathophysiology, and
- Exploring family-centred care in neonatal nursing or midwifery.
This task aligns with all course learning outcomes.
Instructions:
- Carefully read the case study
- Write a 1500-word essay
Your essay should be structured into four distinct sections (a-d), each comprising
approximately 350-400 words:
Pathophysiology and risk factors
- Discuss the pathophysiology and risk factors of the condition relevant to the case study.
- This should be a broad discussion, without referring to the neonate in the case study.
Management
- Discuss how professionals in your field (nursing or midwifery) provide care to neonates with the condition relevant to the case study, distinct from medical management (e.g., administering but not prescribing medications).
- This section should also be a broad discussion, without referring to the neonate in the case study.
Assessment data analysis
- Directly refers to the neonate in the case study.
- Identify any abnormal clinical manifestations and link them to the pathophysiology discussed earlier – you do not need to repeat the pathophysiology.
- Explain the correlation between observed clinical manifestations and the underlying pathophysiology.
- Identify the risk factors specific to the neonate and/or their mother in the case study.
Family-Centred Care (FCC) principles
- Directly refer to the neonate and family in the case study.
- Define FCC and briefly outline its principles (referencing your sources, as principles may vary between sources).
- Apply the relevant principle/s to the family in your case study, demonstrating your understanding of FCC and its practical application.
Additional Guidelines:
No introduction or conclusion
An introduction or conclusion is not required, either for the essay or its subsections
(for example, you do NOT need an introductory sentence such as: Transient
tachypnoea of the newborn (TTN) is a temporary breathing condition caused by
delayed clearance of fluid from a newborn’s lungs, leading to rapid breathing shortly
after birth.)
Use specific subheadings:
- Pathophysiology and Risk Factors
- Management
- Assessment Data Analysis
- Family-Centred Care
Sources:
Use textbooks and journal articles published from 2021 onwards.
Word limit:
Limit your word count to the 1500-word limit (excluding the reference list but including in-text citations).
Academic standards:
- Write in third person using academic language.
- Do not use dot points.
- Follow the Health Group Writing and Referencing Guidelines.
