Marking criteria

Your answer will be assessed on your ability to:

  • present a sustained and logical argument in answer to the question, in your own words.
  • demonstrate an understanding of change and continuity
  • support your argument with a detailed analysis of relevant, accurate, historical information from your resource material
  • use historical terms and concepts appropriately.

PART 2

  • Writing an essay paragraph

Length: between 80 – 120 words

Take ONE of the subpoints from the essay introduction and your essay outline, and write an essay paragraph in answer to the question:

What do frescoes reveal about the society of ancient Thera?

Consider the following:

  • Remember, you are only writing about ONE of the three frescos named above.
  • The aim of your paragraph is to support your thesis statement. Don’t simply describe your chosen fresco; argue in support of your thesis – that your fresco reveals information about Theran society, their way of life. Your particular argument will depend on the fresco you choose.

For example, if you choose to write about the Young Boxers, it wouldn’t be a good idea to try to prove the Therans’ deep connections to the sea, but you would certainly discuss pastimes, and that some interpreters also believe there is a class distinction between the two boys.

Now write your essay paragraph. Aim for around 80 – 120 words:
