This activity is related to the unit of competency: BSBWOR301 Organise Personal Work Priorities & Development In particular, you will be required to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in relation to this unit of competency.

Overview Below are a number of practical tasks to be completed over a period of time in a real or simulated workplace where you will perform the duties of a manager.

The following tasks may be completed as a workplace project based on your own organisation and job role, or as a simulated workplace project based on a fictitious organisation, or an organisation you are familiar with.
1. Read the case study, then answer to the questions that follow.
Case study
Felix works as an executive assistant for a large multinational environmental products company. He is part of the sales team, which is responsible for providing support to the sales management team. His team currently has the following work goals which are part of the wider strategic plan of the company:
‘Increase sales by 10% for the six months to end December 2008’
‘Improve inter-departmental relations and effectiveness of work output with the marketing team’
‘Undertake an audit of physical assets held by the department by end December 2008’
‘Complete quality improvement data log by end February 2009’
Felix’s main responsibilities are to provide day-to-day administrative support to the sales management team, including scheduling meetings, taking minutes, filing, copying, collating of documents, some report writing and editing, taking phone messages, organising travel plans and booking conference and meeting venues.
2. Describe how Felix could set his own work goals to support the sales management team, using one of his key responsibilities as a base.

Felix has the following tasks to complete this week:
Copy report for meeting on Wednesday
Take phone calls each morning from 8.00 to 9.30 am during management meeting (Sally can cover this if needed)
Type and distribute minutes from Wednesday meeting (must be done by Wednesday evening – urgent)
Book flight for Director of Marketing to Sydney on Friday’s early morning flight (don’t book until after Wednesday meeting)
Book accommodation for conference in 3 months' time
Edit annual report for next month’s deadline
File last week’s sales figures
Phone auditor and arrange a meeting for next week for management team (available every day so not urgent)

Each week, Felix checks he has completed all his tasks on a Friday afternoon, before he finishes for the week. He ticks the column on his work plan and circles any tasks he needs to continue with the following week. Felix needs to keep editing the annual report and confirm the conference bookings, as well as his normal phone calls and Wednesday morning meeting tasks. He has completed the other tasks.
