The assignment is an individual Assessment written in the form of a business report addressed to the senior management of the organisation.
Aim and Key Objectives
The aim of the assessment is to give you an opportunity to apply what you have learnt from the operations management paper to a practical setting. The emphasis in this assessment will be on analysis, critical thinking, and the application of the right strategy /technique /tool /methodology in a practical setting either on your organisation / organisational function, or an organisation of your choice. Where possible, you should use real examples and data, particularly where making the case that there is a problem. (NB: All materials are confidential and are only used for assessment purposes.)
You should stick to the case organisation/function that is approved by the lecturer. Write a business report from a customers’ (consumers or internal organisational customers) perspective addressed to the senior management of the case organisation. In case that you need to change a case organisation/function or employ a different perspective,
- Length: 3000 ± 600 words (excluding executive summary, tables, figures, references, and appendices).
- Diagrams/figures may be useful but must be briefly explained/described.
- Be clear and concise.
The approach should be ‘critical’ instead of descriptive. The aim is to apply learning from the classroom sessions to the case organisation.
Use a situation at work that could be improved where there is an opportunity to improve the outcome for customers or address an operation deficiency in current processes. Explain the current situation and analyse what is happening, using the ideas or methods we have talked about in class. Use problem-solving techniques that we have talked about. Make sure that you connect the problem and solution to the ideas that we have talked about in class.
Propose solutions and in your implementation plan make sure you discuss who must be involved and what their responsibilities are to make these changes happen.
You are encouraged to interact with the lecturer to clarify ideas and clear any doubts that you have.
The assignment will result in a business report addressed to the senior management of the case organisation.
You must create an operations improvement plan for the organisation, focusing on well-defined issues that will create significant improvement in the result for customers or address an existing operational deficiency.
You may need to limit the scope of the analysis or focus. If so – state that you are doing this. If you are making assumptions – state them.
Reference to the rubric will outline requirements/expectations and the relative weighting of the requirements.
While the analysis and recommendations is the core of your task, do not neglect the other requirements.
