STEM Portfolio
(25 marks
Your STEM Portfolio documents your personal experiences and key aspects of your learning journey in relation to the core principles of STEM Education. Please be honest while reflecting.
There are 5 Sections required for you to fill for your Portfolio:
- Fizzy Tablet Experiment
- Key Features of a Scientific Argument
- Key Principles of STEM Education
- Key Lessons Learned from Microteaching and STEM Model Making
- STEM Creative Showcase (Group)
Item 1 - Fizzy Tablet Experiment
Item Description
The Fizzy Tablet Experiment is a hands-on scientific experiment that can be done with students to explore the concept of “dissolving”. It also gives teachers a framework to introduce the stages of the Scientific Method and the specific vocabulary used so that students can develop proficiency in leading their own experiments.
The Fizzy Tablet can be linked to the following:
Victorian Curriculum Links
- With guidance, pose questions to clarify practical problems or inform a scientific investigation, and predict what the findings of an investigation might be based on previous experiences or general rules (VCSIS082).
- Decide which variables should be changed, measured and controlled in fair tests and accurately observe, measure and record data (VCSIS084).
- With guidance, plan appropriate investigation types to answer questions or solve problems and use equipment, technologies and materials safely, identifying potential risks (VCSIS083).
- Compare data with predictions and use as evidence in developing explanations (VCSIS086).
Links to AITSL Teacher Professional Standards
- Facilitating group work in a safe laboratory environment aligns to AITSL standard 2.4 (AITSL, 2019) - Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments. Conducting a scientific investigation to test a hypothesis aligns to standard 2.1 (AITSL, 2019) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts and teaching strategies of the teaching area. Using the Primary Connections resource “Tablet Investigation” planner will help students complete this experiment efficiently. Using Primary Connections resources links well to the AITSL Standard 6.4 (AITSL, 2019) Understand the relevant and appropriate sources of professional learning for teachers.

Item 2 Key Features of a Scientific Argument
Item Description
Scientific arguments are a great way for students to think critically about scientific concepts by taking on different points of view and engaging with different sources of information.
Instruction
In the next slide, complete the template to create an informed yet succinct scientific argument of your choice from the point of view of a student-learner.
Note: Your “Evidence for Arguments” MUST be referenced from credible scientific online sources and added to the reference list for this section in Harvard Referencing.

Item 3 Key Principles of STEM Education
Item Description
In this item, you will demonstrate your deep thinking on 3 different key principles of STEM Education:
- The role of excursions in STEM Education
- The role of ICT tools in STEM Education
- The role of group work in STEM Education
Instruction
In the next slide, complete the template to write a one-paragraph response for each principle that explains how each principle is an essential aspect of STEM Education.
Use relevant examples, course readings, links to the Victorian Curriculum and appropriate AITSL standards in your explanations.

Instruction
In your groups, agree on one of the following STEM challenges that you will investigate:
- Earthworm Habitat Challenge
- Apple Browning Challenge
- Balloon Racer Challenge
- Egg Drop Challenge
- Magic Sand Challenge
- Lemon Battery Challenge
Once you have decided on the challenge, create ONE SLIDE and attach it in the next slide (after this one).
